OUR PAST AND CURRENT INTERNS

Amanda Leonard

“I had a blast working for Pride and Less prejudice during the summer of 2021! The team is genuine and friendly, highly collaborative, and fully committed to the organization’s mission. Even in a virtual setting, I was enthusiastically included in all-team meetings and strategy sessions and afforded multiple opportunities to execute high-level projects tailored to my particular interests. As a recent graduate, I can say with confidence that the skills I acquired at PLP have helped me succeed in subsequent roles and move forward in my career. This is a great internship for anyone interested in LGBTQ+ advocacy, communications, nonprofit fundraising, and/or the literary world!”

“My internship experience with PLP was very rewarding, enriching, and eye opening. Being able to be a part of the inner workings of this organization and witnessing each team member's dedication to PLP's mission was very insightful and illuminating. For me, being a part of the PLP team meant being able to contribute to making classrooms more inclusive for young children, and being able to help young children see themselves represented in the books they are reading!”

“I’ve been working as an intern with Pride and Less Prejudice for a couple of months and I’ve already had the opportunity to work on various exciting projects that I believe are really making a difference for the organization and our mission. In addition to feeling grateful to be contributing to an organization making a direct difference in the lives of children, I’m learning much more than I expected after such a short time. The most valuable aspect of the internship is the amazing team. It’s fantastic to collaborate with and learn from talented and passionate people from across the country in an environment where everyone is a valued contributor. I’m so grateful to be working with the entire team at PLP!”

While interning for PLP, I had the flexibility to work on many different projects and learn the ins and outs of running a non-profit. One of the main projects I worked on throughout the summer was helping to organize their annual Banned Together Virtual Auction that takes place during Banned Books Week in October. As part of this effort, I learned how to reach out for donations, helped to plan and create social media posts to advertise, and organized items on the backend of the website. This project opened my eyes up to the various types of work that go into running a single event and taught me how to coordinate when working with a team.

My favorite part of this internship was learning more about banned books and reflecting on the importance of literary representation in my own life. Reading PLP’s featured books and the testimonials from teachers who received them filled my heart with so much joy and made me proud of the impact my work had.
